Mazda Brings Mazda3 MPS To Targa Tasmania Rally

Mazda Motorsport Australia is using the hot hatch Mazdaspeed3 (called Mazda3 MPS there)at the tarmac-based rally known as the Targa Tasmania. This will be the eighth race for Mazda and the second for the MPS rally car. The MPS develops 255 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, with power transferred to the road via a standard six-speed manual transmission. It weighs 3,093 pounds and uses 320mm (12.6 inch) ventilated brakes in front and 280mm (11.0 inch) solid discs in the rear.

Built under the watchful eye of Mazda Motorsport chief Allan Horsley, the 190kW Mazda3 MPS front-wheel-drive hot hatches will contest the event's 2WD Showroom competition, travelling 2000km over five gruelling days of competition. Targa Tasmania's racing regulations require that the Mazda 3 MPS rally car remain essentially standard. That means both cars are competing with standard audio equipment, power windows and carpets and upholstery intact. This makes it a bit more comfortable for Alister McRae and his co-driver.

necessary safety equipment fitted on the Mazda includs a PCD roll cage, racing seats, five-point harnesses and a fire extinguisher, but the performance modifications are kept to a minimum. The MPS is equipped with upgraded springs and struts, brake pads, a new steering wheel, navigation equipment, cat-back exhaust (cats are still fitted), some additional ducting to cool off the brakes and a revised ECU. Among the competitors in the "Showroom 2WD" class are a Mazda 3 diesel, a Peugeot 206 GTi 180, a Fiat Punto Sport and a Toyota TRD Aurion.

Hyundai To Phase Out Tiburon; Get Veloster Based Car

This year is the last for the Tiburon two-door hatch as it won't be produced for the 2009 model year. But the rear-wheel drive Genesis is not a replacement for the long-serving (since 1997) Tiburon coupe is what Hyundai points out. New Genesis coupe is due to hit dealerships in early 2009 as 2010 model, a time when Tiburon won't be around.

John Krafcik, product development vice president for Hyundai Motor America said,“We are seriously looking at a small front-wheel-drive coupe to replace the Tiburon, but I can’t say when that will happen,”. Adding further, Krafcik said the replacement likely would be similar to the Veloster coupe concept first shown at the Seoul auto show in April 2007. Bearing a bit of a resemblance to Kia’s Cee’d the fwd Veloster coupe was powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission.

So now it can be safely concluded that the new Veloster-based car would be the spiritual heir to the Tiburon legacy.

BMW 7 Series Interior: Spy Photo

This car interior spy photo has been verified to be the new F01 7-series interior. It's a preproduction / mock-up using termporary materials, but the design is final. The gear shift lever has moved back to the center console and there are more buttons on the steering wheel.

Just like the exterior as seen in initial spy shots of BMW's upcoming 2009 7 Series, the interior also appears to be subdued. The woodgrain and some of the panels don't line up well, but that's ok considering that this is not yet a production model. Good to see that the iDrive screen is better integrated into the dash.

These and earlier spy shots shows a definate move by BMW towards new and more simple design ethos but how well these change will be accepted by BMW's target audience still remains to be seen.

Ford Fiesta S Model For China: Photo Gallery

Ford today released photos for the Chinese spec 2009 Ford Fiesta S Model. New Ford Fiesta was seen for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show last month, but that was the European spec version. Now earlier this week Fiesta made its China debut at the 2008 Beijing Auto Salon in Beijing (Click For Fiesta Details). To give the Chinese Fiesta an exclusive touch, it was launched in the sporty “S” trim. This trim version comes with a different rear apron with a chromed exhaust pipe, darkened headlamps, front fog lamps with aluminum-style wraparound along with 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Chinese Fiesta is scheduled to begin production before the end of the year at Ford's $510 million Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA) plant in Nanjing, China.
North America will still have to wait until 2010 for its version of the car. Other expected models in the Fiesta range include a higher performance ST model as well as a RS range topper.

Brilliance BS4 Station Wagon Debut at 2008 Auto China

China car manufacturer Brilliance unveiled its BS4 Station Wagon model earlier this week at 08 Beijing Auto Show in China. For those who might not be familiar, Brilliance is BMW’s Chinese partner. Last year it launched the sedan version of BS4 in the home market. The BS4 Wagon continues with the original front end design of the BS4 sedan, but the rear end has been transformed from sedan into wagon quite tastefully. Looking at the front grill of the wagon, you will realise how similar it is to BMW's trademark face grill.

The BS4 wagon is packed with a 1.8L Mitsubishi G93 4 cylinder producing a 134 hp at 6500 rpm. Both BS4 Sedan & Wagon have been designed and engineered by the famous Italian house, Pininfarina. So for most people interiors and exteriors of the car should be ok but same can't be said about its performance.

The Brilliance is aiming to get a decent foothold for BS4 in the European, and Chinese markets. For Europe the sale of both Brilliance BS4 wagon and sedan is expected to start by the end of this year.

Its styling has been influenced by that of the Alfa 8C Competizione, with similar headlights, taillights and frameless side windows. Alfa is fitting a new driver preferences system in the Mito, with selected modes for engine response, brakes, steering, suspension and transmission. The 'DNA' set-up will allow drivers to select 'Dynamic', 'Normal' and extra-traction 'All-Weather' modes, and it's the first such system in a car of this size.

Once in production, Alfa is likely to launch a top performance version of the Mito, likely to be badged GTA, which promises to be one of the most powerful engines in the supermini class.

Cadillac CTS Wagon Spy Photos

The long-rumored GM's sports wagon codenamed internally as the GMX 206, the Cadillac CTS Wagon prototype is for the first time caught by spy photographers. It's a four-door and appears to have the same footprint as the CTS sedan. The protoype is expected to be unveiled by GM in September at this year’s Paris Auto Show.

Reports suggest that Cadillac will build only a few thousand units of the CTS station wagon at the GM's Michigan plant. The new Wagon is aimed mainly at Europe, where the market is much larger than it is in US. It is expected to come loaded with the 304-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 that powers the toplevel 2008 sedan. GM will start building the Cadillac CTS luxury wagon in the Spring of 2009 and it will act as a replacement for SRX which is going to be phased out by first half of 2009.

Tata Nano India Review: Secret Behind Peoples Car

No single car by the Tata Motors has been talked about as much as the Tata Nano. Classified as being part of the new breed of 21st century cars the Nano symbolizes the new age philosophy of smaller, lighter and cheaper cars. The project was initiated in the year 2003 to construct a small sized car in the range of one lakh rupees i.e about $2100. This was done after considering the fact that India had a considerable number of families that were being forced to drive around on two wheelers due to the lack of finance for a four wheeler.

Hundreds of reviewers who took Nano for a ride had a different take on it. But there was a lot that all agreed on. Nano is a ultra compact but looks bigger due to its height and wide stance. Its interior is unexpectedly roomy with decent quality material used for furnishing. The car is more than capable of accommodating four adults along with few small bags in its 130 litre boot volume. Fold down the rear seat and the parcel tray fixed to it and you can reach the luggage area.

Everything seemed almost normal till now but to make the cheapest car in the world there has to be few things outside the ordinary. Looking causally at the car inside-out you can feel that there is something different in Nano. Look carefully and you can see lot of cost-cuttings. Tata Nano has about one third of the usual number of parts which is made possible due to its centralised wiring; wheels mounted with three rather than four bolts, missing left hand side wing mirror and seats moulded in one single piece. These are just few of the innovative techniques used to cut price and weight to bare minimum resulting a 600kg car versus 683kg for its nearest competitor Maruti Suzuki 800.

The Nano is powered by a tiny 624cc engine big enough to drive it to a top speed of 106kph. The all-aluminium parallel-twin petrol engine makes 35ps of power at 5250rpm and a max torque of 48Nm. The fuel consumption is claimed to be 23.5km/l while emissions are very low. Nano meets all current regulatory requirements in India including full frontal crash, head impact on steering wheel, body block impact on steering and seat belt anchorage strength.

This rear wheel driven machine is a genuine car in every sense of the word and earns the well deserved honour of being the cheapest (most affordable) means of private transportation.

First Drive: 2009 Honda FCX Clarity on the road
The electric motor only puts out 136 hp but the 189 lb-ft torque is available instantly when you press the go pedal. When the demand for forward momentum exceeds the output of the fuel cell, a lithium ion battery mounted under the rear seat provides extra electrons to the get the motor spinning faster. The single-speed transmission mounted co-axially with the motor also means no shifts to interrupt the flow of acceleration. Pressing the pedal on the left brings plenty of negative acceleration. The pedal feel is firm and the brakes modulate easily. The electronic braking controls seamlessly blend friction and regenerative braking.

Honda will lease the FCX Clarity from three dealers in Southern California
Honda has announced a few more details about the whos and wheres of the FCX Clarity launch that is due to kick off next summer. We already knew that lessees would pay $600 a month for the car, which covers all maintenance costs and collision insurance; fuel is extra. Honda told Automotive News that about 50 people have told Honda that they'd like to be among the few who get to lease an FCX Clarity. Honda also said that three Honda dealers, in or near the cities of Santa Monica, Irvine and Torrance in Southern California, will be the places to get an FCX Clarity. If you're interested in adding your name to the 50, you can do so at the official FCX Clarity site.

First Drive: 2009 Honda FCX Clarity
And you got it right: This thing is no concept, no prototype. It's a finished automobile (and a beautifully finished one at that) that'll be available for three-year leases in Southern California for $600 per month. The lease amount doesn't reflect the car's production cost, of course; instead, it's meant to filter the applicant list to the car's eventual audience -- specifically, households earning $150,000 per year, with presumably well-educated occupants. Combined with its co-axial and compact motor/gearbox up front, lithium battery pack under the rear seat, and single, 5000psi storage tank behind the rear passengers, the Clarity is brilliantly laid out. Interior space is generous, particularly its rear passenger legroom, and trunk volume is commendable. From a stop, the lithium batteries offer an initial energy surge to bridge the power gap as the fuel cell awakens from it "Auto Stop" hibernation, and, during braking, the batteries are replenished just as with a familiar hybrid car. While cruising, the Clarity is eerily silent. A few whines, maybe, but there's not even much aerodynamic noise.

2009 Honda FCX Clarity Road Test
The FCX is a futuristic jellybean, first impressions suggesting a cross between the new Honda Accord and the Prius. Toss in a dash of the Honda CR-Z concept vehicle that debuted in Tokyo, last month - at least the show car's split rear glass, which folds over into the tailgate. If we had any complaint, surprisingly, it was rear visibility, despite the sedan's expanse of glass. Inside, the compact FCX would likely qualify as a full-size four-door; even with the driver's seat set to handle my 6'2" frame, there was plenty of legroom in the back. The sedan's instrument panel vaguely resembles that of the new Accord, with its stairstep layout. There's a huge, high-res LCD for the built-in navigation system, or to display the complex power system at work underneath. The instrument panel centers around a flashing, multi-color cluster that looks a lot like Tokyo at night, and can be nearly as distracting, as you struggle to understand what the various fluorescent readouts signify.

2007 Los Angeles Auto Show: Nissan Treads Softly With Redo of 2009 Murano
The 2009 Murano retains the overall shape and silhouette of its predecessor, albeit with a design cue or two thrown in from the Rogue, particularly the exaggerated wheel arches. The new Murano's taillights also jut into the rear hatch. Nissan said the Murano has a new hood, a "distinctive" grille treatment and 18- or 20-inch wheels. The Murano now has a large, "top-load" power-sliding glass moonroof and second-row skylight for '09, as well as new rain-sensing windshield wipers, a power liftgate and an enhanced rearview monitor. Revisions to the 3.5-liter DOHC V6 result in an increase in horsepower to 265 versus 240 on the previous version. Nissan says the Murano also gets a new advanced continuously variable transmission with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Murano rides on the company's new "D-platform," which Nissan said is similar to that used in the 2008 Nissan Altima, and gets a new suspension design.

Press Release
At a Glance: 2009 Nissan Murano

The original Nissan Murano, when it was introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, set new standards for style and sportiness in the expanding mid-size crossover sport-utility vehicle marketplace, becoming, in essence, a “class of one.” The all-new, second generation 2009 Murano elevates that unique position through a “super evolution” of the original design – with a new exterior and interior, enhanced technology and a new premium driving feel resulting from a new, advanced platform and continued refinement of Murano’s standard V6 engine and advanced, second-generation Xtronic CVT™.

The most striking visual element of the 2009 Murano is its new body, which imparts a “modern art” feel while still maintaining its distinctive “Murano-ness.” The front end features a bold grille and wide front headlights.
